
And
therefore the demand of getting advice and different services for both
homeless and owned dogs is increasing from time to time as HAPS is the
only known organization publicizing in the city and also all over the
country through Medias about its activity for the animals and giving
advises for dog owners.
Adoption:
The pictures of the dogs are advertised for adoption
by
the society in different super markets, and in public areas in which it is
thought to be visible by people that wants to adopt as some of them are no
more wanted by their family and the family decided to avoid them either by
killing or abandoning them, and the others are homeless in critical
conditions due to the change in residential areas by the owner and left
behind.
In this
way a total of 107 dogs are saved and given treatment and re homed to a
new family in the past fiscal year.

medical care:
Among the
dogs that has been saved the one found with a wire rapped up on the neck
and got infected as it goes deeper to the skin and finally re homed to a
lovely family after being given continuous medical treatment and

The six

eaten by a hyena and raised in HAPS shelter by bottle feeding and finally
adopted to a family can be mentioned as an example

Administrative activity
Besides
the piles of day to day administrative activities which ensures the
continuation of the society, in the first quarter of the year, the society
audited the previous year financial activity by Chartered Certified
Accountants (UK) and Authorized Auditors (Ethiopia) and summarized the
previous year activity report to be approved by the general assembly after
it has been presented by the audit firm itself to the general assembly
meeting which was open to both government and private medias and which was
hold in the assembly hall of Ministry of Agriculture who is the sector
government authority of the society and directly concerned about animals
and related issues, by creating awareness through the participating
government and private medias which finally gave a wider coverage.
This
activity apart from reaching the government and the donor community in the
form of report it has created awareness about the activities of the
society as it was broadcasted in Radio, TV and different News papers all
over the Country to millions of people.



Conditions has been prepared to organize fund
raising event for the construction of self sustained dogs and cats
shelter, clinic with drug store and education center that can give low
cost vet service for the community , by convincing organizations that can
support, through trade shows and bazaars and music concert.
A
repeated meeting that constitute the management, the Board and experienced
members and other concerned supporters has also been held to suggest ideas
and discuss about the future of the society’s activity and on how this
people contribute their profession and experience to support the
management by sharing tasks.
Visit by
international organizations:
In the
beginning of the year 2008, the activities that can improve the overall
situation of the society has been made and accordingly the society’s
activity was visited by one of the well known animal welfare organization,
Best Friends Animal Society USA representative, in
order to establish a ground on how this organization can help its
activities.
Based on
this a meeting was arranged with the directly related institutions such as
Addis Ababa Urban Agriculture Department and was carried on in good manner
and with supportive ideas raised among each other and specifically Best
Friends promised to donate for the completion of the already started
project in the Bole area and at the same time HAPS arranged a visit for
Best Friends representative to the government clinics in Addis Ababa for the Best
friends Animal society to think of upgrading those clinics for the
community.
Based on
this precondition to extend the project has been made by discussing with
the concerned government bodies.

HAPS also
arranged a meeting for the Best Friends representative with Private
Veterinarians Association working in Addis Ababa to discuss on how they
can work in collaboration with HAPS in order to reduce the problem.

At the
last quarter of the year RSPCA UK International Aid Officer Coralie Farren
has also made a visit to our society in order to supervise the activities
of the project that RSPCA was donated for and to discuss on how we can
work together for the future.
Experience
sharing:
According
to the idea generated from members to organize a discussion forum, which
participate all the stakeholders of the society in order to discuss and
reach a mutual understanding on how the problem of homeless animals and
related issues can be solved permanently.
The
society has also managed to participate in the OIE 2nd global
conference held in Cairo, Egypt under the sponsor ship of World Society
for the Protection of Animals /WSPA/ which is an important opportunity to
get an exposure with the international animal welfare community.
Improvement
in animal welfare:
The
awareness of people regarding animal welfare is enhanced and the demand
for vaccination and spay neuter raised and made them participate in the
activity of the society.
It is
being managed to make people to participate in the activities of the
society voluntarily and through apprenticeship student from
different colleges and Universities of different field and level of
studies.
The
effort made by the society in the awareness creation aspect using all
opportunities has made a great deal of contribution for the inclusion of
advancement
of animal welfare
activity in the proclamation.
Challenges:
The pressure imposed on
the society due to the objection of dog shooting and poisoning in the Bale
Mountains the origin of the society.
